The Songwriting School of Los Angeles was honored to welcome Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Member Mike Love to Songwriters on Songwriting, LIVE – Interviews by Paul Zollo, on Friday September 16. View the entire interview, below – via the link.
The two frankly discussed the iconic songs of the Beach Boys catalog, their evolution, and Love’s role in those he contributed to as lyricist and, often, as shaper of hooks. The conversation honored and examined the towering genius of Brian Wilson’s musical architecture while revealing Mike Love’s place in the collaborative process that brought those songs to the world. As Paul Zollo noted fondly, “Without the words, we couldn’t sing these great songs.”
The show began with a recitation from poet Stephen Kalinich, who contributed lyrics to a number of Beach Boys songs in the 60s. He dedicated his poem to his friend, our guest of honor, Mike Love.
Mike Love is a founding member of The Beach Boys, and the lyricist of countless classic songs written with his cousin Brian Wilson, including iconic standards such as “Good Vibrations,” “California Girls,” “Fun Fun Fun” and more. He co-wrote the song “Kokomo” with Terry Melcher and John Phillips.  He also sang lead and/or harmonies on all the Beach Boys hits, has toured with the Beach Boys around the world for decades, and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He even went to India to study with the Maharishi along with The Beatles and Donovan. All and more of which is entailed in his new memoir, Good Vibrations: My Life as a Beach Boy.Â
